*gosh*

Friday, April 29, 2005 by Daren Darrow

Well dead week is over. We are coming upon finals week. I am being a bum today and not doing much. I want to go to Tulsa tonight, but I haven't managed to get up significant motivation to go. I was going to go with Alex and Scott, but they backed out for now.

Mikel is at home taking care of his dad. His dad just had a hernia surgery and it medicated and in bed. But he should be fine.

Things are on track this semester. Its odd how great my grades should be. I guess it goes to show what happens when you focus on "you" and not others or what others want.

I got a job with the The Daily O'Collegian. It's the university newspaper, and the fourth largest news paper in the state of Oklahoma. This summer I will be the deisgn editor and this fall I will be the assistant design editor, as well as, the arts beat reporter. It should be fun.

Nikki is graduating on Saturday (May 7). That should be interesting. It's not too long till I will be in her position. She got her management job with Target. Altho, she will now be in Tulsa rather than Dallas. She seems ok with that.

OSX Tiger is awesome, it's the newest version of Mac OS. Many new features that I like and I'm running a full 64bit OS now. yay!

Oh, and I'm still irked by the fact that I'm now an Alltel customer. Since ATTWS and Cingular merged, they were required to divest some of their market area. So this area (Oklahoma City, Stillwater as well as Sherman-Dennison, Texas and Conn.) was sold to Alltel. I'm still debating canceling my account as soon as they announce that they are requireing me to switch to a new plan and a new phone. Since they are breaching my contract, then I won't have to pay the cancelation fee. I'll then get a Cingular account and be happy again.

Going with Alltel wouldn't be horrible for the short term, but I'm sure they will require me to sign a 1 year or 2 year contract with them. However, in December I will be moving to California and will not have a local coverage area there. I would be roaming on Verizon or SprintPCS all the time. I'm not sure how well that would go over. I'd rather not have to deal with it. At least with Cingular, I know the network is there.

Making the religious people squirm since ...

Wednesday, April 20, 2005 by Daren Darrow

I love it when I get the chance to make extreme-in-your-face religious people squirm.

Today we gave our presentation on my Programs and Audiences course for our cable network that we created. It is Celebrate. A network for 18+ GLBT market. So a lot of what we had is different from what you expect from a class project. We were edgy, fresh and in your face.

Well, on Monday half of the class gave their presentations. One of the groups was IDTV, infinitum deux (or something in Latin that means one/only god) and they sucked. Literally, their network had no inspiration, their original programming was lame and I don't think they had enough advertisers to even stay on the air for a month, but I gave them the possibility that they would find someone, *cough* Pat Robertson, that would pay to keep them on the air for say a year or so.

We get to rate each presentation from 1-5 (5 being the best) and whoever get the most points gets extra credit. Well they were the worst and I gave them a 1. I'm sure we got the same thing from them today. Fifty people loved our presentation, and 4 hated it.

The main guy in the religious group refused to even look at the presentation. When we started talking about LifeStyles Brand Condoms as one of our advertisers, he started shaking his head in disbelief. It was great.

I think we probably had the best presentation given today, and perhaps the best of both days. The only real issue was my issues with public speaking. I'm still not always comfortable with it. At least now the only affliction I have is shaking like I have Parkinson Disease. (sorry for not being PC on that)

If you want to see the PowerPoint presentation, you can download the really large folder of stuff here. (Nearly 50MB) This includes the unedited Word documents and many of the sources we used. All of our book that we created isn't in here, but you get quite a bit of it.

I put a few photos that I've taken over the past few months online. Some are in San Francisco, some are from my camera phone and others are around campus or in Dallas.

Here are a few samples.

Grrr Tiger

Tuesday, April 12, 2005 by Daren Darrow

Apple is about to release OS X Tiger, this makes me happy. Widgets,
desktop search and the ability to say "my computer can address more
memory than your computer" thanks to 64bit support.

The semester is nearing completion. Dead week is the last week of the
month and finals week is the subsequent week. I'm looking forward to
it, this has been the most difficult semester that I've had in awhile.
The sad part is that I will only get about a week off prior to my
summer classes starting. But i do get about 2 months off this summer
and get 6 more hours taken care of. Guess I can't complain too much.
Oh yes I can.

I've got some sad news. I'm potentially going to kill off this Web
site. I don't update it often enough to keep it around anymore, and I
don't feel the need to have a Web presence. Does this mean i'm not as
geeky anymore? Perhaps, It does. I'm just not that into it like I use
to. I've found myself finding new interest and they are pushing away
the desire to keep the old ones.
