Travels in the heartland (or is that heartless?)

Sunday, July 31, 2005 by Daren Darrow

Well I arrived in Wisconsin yesterday, and thus far my soul is still in tact.

I only had 2 1/2 hours of sleep Friday night, so I am amazed at how alert and not-so-crappy looking I was when I finally arrived in Appleton. It was a fun trip to get here though. I flew out of Dallas on ATA (not too bad of an airline) into Chicago. Took CTA L-Trains (or is it el-trains?) to the Quincy/Wells stop and then wondered around by the Sears tower for an hour or so before going to Union Station to catch my Amtrak train to Milwaukee. It was fun doing all that. I just need to somehow work a boat ride into this trip. Then I can say I was on trains, plains, automobiles and boats all on the same trip.

We're going out to drink later, so that will be fun. Wisconsin bars are interesting. They have more of a community feel than Oklahoma bars do.

Tomorrow I have lunch at Humana with some friends and then will be going out some after that to hang out. We leave early Tuesday morning for Chicago and the rest of our trip back. Hopefully all goes well.

Harry Potter and The Halfblood Prince

Friday, July 22, 2005 by Daren Darrow

I finished reading Harry Potter and the halfblood prince last night. I'm still in shock. That's all I can really say. I knew someone was going to die, but not who I had expected/hoped for. ugg.

Now I'm reading Angels and Demons by Dan Brown (the same author as The Divinci Code)

Only one more week of class left. yay!

Have you ever wondered how much power that microwave takes to pop that bag of popcorn? What about your toaster or coffee maker? How much power does that 'energy efficient' refrigerator actually use? Here's a write up of perhaps the ultimate in home power monitoring hacks.

The Daily O'Collegian

Tuesday, July 05, 2005 by Daren Darrow

July 6, 2005 - The Daily OColly
June 29, 2005 - The Daily OColly

Well I'm really enjoying my job at The O'Colly. I finally asked tonight what my salary is, and I am surprised. I'm averaging a little more than $10 per hour. Not bad for a job where I work only about 6 hours per week.

I posted my last two front page designs. Click on the image to view the Adobe PDF of the front page for more detail. I can really see a progression in my skills.

I'm quite proud of the June 29, 2005, edition. Some believe it's not my best work, but it's my favorite.
