First paycheck

Saturday, January 14, 2006 by Daren Darrow

Well I got my first paycheck from ANG/The Argus today. Yay for money. We are fine with money right now anyway, but it's good to have the income started.

Apparently I've impressed everyone at The Argus and the people at the Tri-Valley Herald that I work with. They've never had anyone start (get bored) and go through design training and actually designing live pages so soon. Usually I'd be training on dummy pages that aren't being printed, but since I know what I'm doing they gave me the chance and let me do a few live pages each day.

I guess everyone has conversations about me all the time. Al Fields (the guy who hired me and defiantly a 'higher up' in the company, and he's the one training me) keeps saying good things about me to my bosses. And my bosses keep talking and are amazed at how fast I've caught on. I'm already slotting (well next week) and that normally doesn't happen for at least a month or so.

I think they feel they defiantly got a bargain with me.

We finally have our DirecTV and DSL installed and working. Had problems with both but Mikel got to talk to SBC today when I was at work and got the DSL up and running.

Tomorrow our grocery order comes. We ordered today on safeway.com (gotta love safeway) and I scheduled it to be delivered tomorrow before noon. We go do our own shopping some, but large orders are a bitch to carry back to the apartment. So we decided to just buy incremental stuff ourselves and have them deliver the big orders. We should be fully stocked with food now.

Mikel goes tomorrow to set up his schedule with Kimpton. He got a desk clerk job at The Argonaut Hotel. It's not a management position like he had hoped for, but it's a job. He should have a chance to move to a supervisor/managment job in 3-6 months. Tomorrow he gets to go fill out all the HR paperwork and figure out his schedule.

Yawn

Well I'm sitting at work, bored, waiting for more stories to come in for me to edit. I'm not certain there will be anything else tonight so I might end up just sitting here.

Tomorrow and Wednesday are my days off this week, and Thursday and Friday I
go to another paper in our group for design training. I can't wait for
that. At least then I'll get to do the portion of my job that I love and
shouldn't be bored as often either. I started learning some this week, but
not enough. I really dislike the Harris Pagedesign system.

In other news, today we sort of have DirecTV installed. The guy came and
installed the satelite but failed to get a receiver working (he tried 4 of
them). I couldn't think of anythign that he did wrong, but I find it hard
to believe that he had four bad receivers in his truck. He eventually gave
up and told us to order Comcast (no, i'm not kidding) or call DirecTV and
have someone else install the service.

He left and I called his installation company and complained. They tried to
make me wait another week for someone to come out (we've already been
waiting nearly 2 weeks), so I complained and they should be sending out a
supervisor to finish the job tomorrow. I hope it goes well.

Thats all for now.

New Job

Tuesday, January 03, 2006 by Daren Darrow

Yesterday was my first day at The Argus and it wasn't bad. Their system feels very antiquated and I'm not too fond of some of their design styles but it will be ok.

I have rotating shifts, so I will get different days off each week. That's going to take some getting used to, but it shouldn't be too bad. At least this week I have the 5th and 6th off, so I can go to the city with Mikel for his interview.

Next week I have the 10th and 11th off, which is when Macworld is at the Mascone Center. I want to go, but I don't want to spend the money right now for tickets. I might just have to wait until next year for that.

What is the most annoying thing about my new job you ask? Well, I would say that is the fact that I'm on a Dell computer running Windows 95! Yes, 95! I can handle being on a PC, but why Win95? I hope it all changes in the spring when everything switches to Adobe InDesign CS2 and InCopy.

edit: Oh, and I don't have internet access at work :( Just e-mail (which connects to a 192.x.x.x ip.)
